This essay takes you from anxiety to conscious focused attention in the present moment.
When you start to look into the future, you confront a multiplicity of problems and barriers that impact you in the present. It feels as though you will never be able to move forward because you have manifested problems in your life that you have yet to encounter. They are not yet real and so there is no way for you to deal with them.
This form of thinking does not allow for you to solve problems as they come and zaps you of the energy that could be used to solve the problem directly in front of you.
For instance, when you run a marathon, the start of the race seems like a million miles away from the finish. Your mind begins to work against you as it propagates fear and worries about the miles ahead. This psychological strain begins to impact your body as it confronts the harsh Earth with every step.
The dread and angst of the pain ahead can be wiped out if you confide yourself in the present moment and take each step, one at a time. Focus on the moment, do not allow your mind to strain into the future, and the pain will become something you can deal with.
The journey will still be long and hard, but you will be able to manage it and complete the course because you have not allowed yourself to be swept into the chaos of the future. You realize that with each step you take, you get closer to finishing and your mind grows in power and confidence.
There are many avenues in life that look like this; starting a business, driving across the country, finishing school, or working on a Magna Carta. They all consist of long journeys that take small steps to complete.
Many people are thrown off by the amount of steps they have to take in order to complete the course. It seems unbearable when you allow your mind to run freely into the chaos of the future. It becomes bearable and joyous when you calmly focus on the steps in front of you and will the mind to be in the present.
The calm focus we are all looking for is not something out of reach, but the only thing within our reach that we have the power to obtain. To foster calm focus in your life it will take practice and willpower. But it will take you far, energizing you along the way with an unobtrusive confidence in yourself and knowledge that you are capable of whatever it is you set out to do.
As long as you hold true to the words:
One step at a time
You will be able to climb the highest peaks and overcome the most treacherous valleys.
